Iced Matcha Latte Recipe

You don’t need to go to Starbucks to have an Iced Matcha Latte. Instead, make this recipe at home! This energy drink is cool, creamy and delicious. Here is my favorite recipe for an Iced Matcha Latte! I make this energy drink almost every day in the summer until the temperatures drop in the fall. It’s fresh and creamy, with a slightly grassy, earthy flavor that I love.

Matcha became a big hit in the United States a few years ago, and these days you can find an Iced Matcha Latte on almost every coffee shop menu. I still order them from time to time, but overall I prefer to make my own Iced Matcha Latte at home. Here’s why: I can choose matcha powder. Ippodo Ummon is my favorite (I also like Golde for lattes). Check out my guide to the best matcha powders to find the one that’s right for you! I can control the balance of flavors. I’ve tasted incredibly sweet Iced Matcha Lattes in cafes, and others that only taste like milk. At home, I can use my preferred proportion of matcha to liquid (1 teaspoon per 8 ounces) and add sweetener to taste. When making your own Iced Matcha Latte, be sure to taste and adjust the flavors to suit your preferences.

What is Matcha? Before we get to the recipe, I want to give you a little information about matcha. This green tea powder was first produced in Japan in the 12th century and is used in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. Made from shade-grown green tea leaves ground into a fine powder, matcha is known for its high antioxidant content. Since you consume the entire tea leaf when you drink it, it also contains more caffeine than regular green tea, although often less than a cup of coffee.

Generally, you will find two grades of matcha. The ceremonial grade tends to have the most vibrant green color and a balanced flavor, both herbaceous and nutty. It works great in lattes and can also be whisked in hot water to make green tea. Although it is much cheaper, the culinary grade has a stronger, more bitter taste and is better suited to baking recipes.

Ingredients for Iced Matcha Latte

Want to try this Iced Matcha Latte? Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Matcha green tea powder, of course! Matcha brands vary in color, flavor and price. If you don’t already have a favorite brand, I recommend checking out my guide to the best matcha powders to find one that will be perfect. Note that some matchas are already sweetened, like Rishi’s sweetened matcha powder that I mention in the article. If you prefer to sweeten your latte to your liking, be sure to get a powder with just one ingredient: green tea.
  • Cold Water – You will whisk the matcha in a small amount of water before adding the milk.
  • Milk – Any type you like! I love using homemade almond milk or oat milk in this recipe. For a richer, creamier latte, experiment with regular whole milk or even coconut milk.
  • Sweetener of choice – Honey, maple syrup, and simple syrup work great. Feel free to skip the sweetener if you prefer.

How to prepare an Iced Matcha Latte

This Iced Matcha Latte recipe is very simple to make! Here’s how to do it:

  1. First, sift the matcha. One thing to know about matcha: it tends to form lumps. It’s hard to break up these small lumps with a whisk, so if you notice your matcha has lumps, be sure to sift it through a fine mesh strainer before adding liquid.
  2. Next, whisk the matcha with the water. I recommend using a bamboo whisk called a chasen for this. Specially designed for whipping matcha, it does an excellent job of dispersing the powder in the water and making the mixture lightly frothy. If you don’t have a chasen, an electric milk frother also works great.
  3. Finally, prepare the latte. Fill a glass with ice cubes and pour the matcha mixture into it. Add milk and stir to combine, then add honey or maple syrup to reach your desired level of sweetness. Enjoy!

Iced Matcha Latte Tips

  • New to matcha? I call for 1 teaspoon of matcha powder in this recipe, but if you’ve never tasted this type of green tea before, you might want to start with less. Use 1/2 teaspoon in your first iced latte. If you like, add more next time once you are used to the taste.
  • Take out the blender. If you don’t have a bamboo whisk or milk frother, you can easily make an Iced Matcha Latte in the blender. Add the matcha powder, water and milk, then mix until foamy. Add sweetener to taste and serve over ice.
